Hospice patients who expire and use a patient status of 40, 41 or 42 on a claim will automatically have the occurrence code 55 with the discharge date added to the claim. This will happen for patients with a thru date on the claim on or after 10/01/2012.
To find out which discharge reasons have the patient status of 40, 41 or 42, go to Barnestorm Office > Codes > Status Codes > D/C Reasons and click on Print Codes. Look under the columns for Hospice Description and Hospice Status.
