How to Bill for Flu Shots

Please see the attached instructional guide for steps to set up and bill for flu/PPV shots in Barnestorm.

** The Home Health Agency is responsible for making sure the correct revenue code and HCPCS codes are put in the Barnestorm system for the Flu Shot and the Flu Shot Administration.Β Here are common codes used in home health:

Revenue Codes for the Vaccine and Administration

  • Vaccine - 0636
  • Administration - 0771

Medicare Part B provides preventive coverage only for certain vaccines.

  • Influenza HCPCS codes: once per flu season (codes 90630, 90653, 90656, 90662, 90673-74, 90682, 90685-88, 90756, Q2035, Q2037, Q2039)
  • Pneumococcal HCPCS codes: (codes 90670, 90732, once per lifetime with high-risk booster after 5 years)

Home Health

Home health agencies can provide the influenza virus vaccine and pneumococcal pneumonia vaccination (PPV), using Type of Bill (TOB) 341: home health outpatient Part B benefit.

Hospice

Hospice agencies can provide the influenza virus and pneumococcal vaccinations to beneficiaries who request them, including those who have elected the hospice benefit. Vaccinations provided by a hospice agency may be billed on an institutional claim to the Medicare contractor. Since these services are not part of the Medicare hospice benefit, they must be billed on a separate claim and must only include charges for the vaccine and their administration.
